The Dramatic Arts Society is a CCA that provides a platform for students to showcase their acting abilities as well as behind-the-scenes work. Every member, ranging from Secondary One all the way to Secondary 5, is given the opportunity to perform in and out of school, as well as take part in national competitions and major events. For example, members perform and flaunt their acting abilities during internal events, for example, the annual Secondary 1 orientation, National Day Concert and Teacher's Day concert. We also perform at external events such as the annual Arts Fest at the Arts House and Celebrate Drama. At a national level, we take part in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), which is held every 2 years. Another very important event that all members are given a chance to perform or help out the annual Evening of Music, Dance and Drama, most commonly known as EMDD, held every year in July. To ensure that all members are well-refined in their acting skills, external trainers are engaged to stretch every member's potential to the maximum, encouraging self-expression and confindence at the same time. These training sessions empower all members to be all-rounders when it comes to stage management, script writing, thinking creatively and out of the box, as well as performing, the key aspect of drama. In fact, all our members are experts when it comes to almost anything about drama: you name it, we've got it!
in CHIJ Katong convent, we take pride in the wide veriety of aesthetics we have, and this is especially so in the context of drama. Here in KC, we have two very unique rooms assigned to Drama. The first is the Black box, located next to the Archives. The Black Box, as its name goes, is entirely black,or so to speak. Two of its walls are blue and green respectively; this make use of blue/green screen technology. We also have many parcan lights and coloured gels so that students can experiment with different couloured lightings, as well as a laser projector that allows for different types of images. the other special room is the Drama Room, located just beside the canteen. In this room one can find a collection of about 100 books about drama in its different forms as well as the key aspects of drama like lighting and stage direction. A library of videos made in Singapore can also be found here; a photo gallery of past drama events can also be found on the wall.
All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: That's us, both past and present proud members of CHIJ Katong Convent's Dramatic Arts Society!!!
